Genell Mixon Whaley

Genell Mixon Whaley of Wallace was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. She was born on July 6, 1928 in Pierce County, Georgia and was one of fifteen children born to Porter and Alda Hogan Mixon. She was predeceased by her husband David John "D.J." Whaley, Jr. her grandson Christopher West, five brothers, six sisters, and two daughters-in-law.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children--Sharon Whaley West and husband Tom of Key Largo, Florida, Jerry Davis Whaley of Dudley, NC, and Timothy Whaley and wife Gail of Wallace, NC; brother--Memory Mixon of Jacksonville, Florida; sisters--Eula Mae Brown of Pensacola, Florida and Dottie Branigan of Morgantown, West Virginia, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Mrs. Whaley was a lifelong, faithful member of Wallace Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Travelling was a favorite thing to do in free time, along with reading and "getting her money's worth" in whatever she did. She was a woman of uncommon character, beauty and grace; and to those who knew her, "an instrument of God's love on this earth". A friend to all, Genell was a strong yet gentle presence who looked for and encouraged the best in everyone. She was a shoulder upon whom many found comfort and support. Genell loved the Lord with all her heart and enjoyed worshipping Him. She cherished her family, her church family and her friends. With a joyful and bubbly spirit, she was a pleasure to be around. Genell will surely be missed but her family and friends are comforted knowing that she is now where her heart desired--in the presence of Jesus.

A celebration of Genell's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Wallace Pentecostal Holiness Church with her pastor, Reverend Bobby Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. til 11:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow the service at Riverview Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family welcomes flowers or contributions may be made to the church in her memory at Wallace Pentecostal Holiness Church--311 South Cumberland Street--Wallace, North Carolina 28466.
