Obituary

Mr. Stephen Henry Gowan, Sr. of Wallace passed from his earthly home to his eternal home on Thursday, February 15, 2018. He was born in New Hanover County on November 13, 1943 and was the only child of the late Stephen Wynn Gowan and Myrtle Elizabeth Rabon Gowan. He was also predeceased by his wife Nita Jean Cottle Gowan, his father-in-law Jerry Henry Cottle, Sr., and his mother-in-law Mary Helen Brown Cottle.

Surviving are his son Stephen Henry Gowan, Jr. and his wife Candace of Charlotte; his daughter Helen Elizabeth Gowan of Wilmington; grandchildren—Mary Elizabeth Gowan and Katherine Jean Gowan of Charlotte; brothers-in-law—Jerry Henry Cottle, Jr. and his wife Judy of Hampstead, David Carroll Cottle of Magnolia, Dr. Ronald Wade Cottle and his wife Dawn of Elizabethtown; and his special evening coffee friends at the Wallace Fast Lane.

For more than 50 years, Steve, Sr. and his father (S.W. Gowan) operated Gowan Drug Company in Wallace. He married his sweetheart, Nita Jean Cottle, and to them were born two children—Stephen, Jr. and Helen. The family attended Wallace First Baptist Church and Steve has been a member there for many years. Steve loved the beach tremendously and had an immense interest in cars of all kinds, especially the Chevrolet Corvette. His knowledge of automobile engines, especially the more powerful ones, was very deep. He also enjoyed many happy years with his Jack Russell Terrier, Reba. One of his favorite things was talking to people. Everyone in our community will miss these conversations with him. The most enjoyable part of life for Steve was in spending time with his family members. He was so proud of them.

A funeral service will be held at Padgett Funeral & Cremation Services on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 3:00 pm with visitation at 2:00 pm. Interment will be in the Riverview Mausoleum in Watha, NC.
