Dollie Mae Southerland



Dollie Mae Southerland, age 95, of Wallace left this earth for her eternal rest on Thursday, July 20, 2017. She was at Johnson Health Center in Smithfield.

She was born on May 29, 1922 in Duplin County and was the daughter of the late Leslie and Etta Willams Miller. She was also predeceased by her husband, Norman Earl Southerland; her son, Allen Southerland "Junior"; brothers, Grover Miller and Roland Miller and sisters, Carrie M. Gurganus and Lillian Groves.

Mrs. Southerland was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are her nieces, Jean Gurganious of Ivanhoe and Cherry Jones of Willard, Dean Groves and husband, Robert of Rose Hill, Fannie Pate and Oscar of Watha; nephews, Jimmy Jones of Ivanhoe and Ronald Miller and wife, Susan of Fayetteville, special nieces, Gina Davis and husband, Rick of Ivanhoe and Tammy Watson and husband, Dr. Mike of Raleigh; special nephew, Austin Miller of Fayetteville and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Dollie Mae Southerland loved her family and friends and found great joy in spending time with them. Dollie was known for her wonderful sense of humor and her abilities in the kitchen. She loved her independence and cherished being able to live at home until very close to the end of her life. She loved flowers, especially roses, and also grew a bountiful garden annually for many years. While Dollie loved her home, she also enjoyed travel and took two especially memorable trips. The first trip was to Hawaii with her brother and sister and the second was at the age of 78, when she traveled cross-country to Arizona and Nevada with her nieces and nephews. Dollie will surely be missed but treasured memories of her will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Island Creek Baptist Church with her pastor, Reverend Dr. Ronald Ginn and the Reverend Buster Price officiating. Burial will follow in Little Creek Cemetery, Wallace, NC .
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
